Disaster Preparedness

Make a Plan

Where will you meet after a disaster if you can’t return home?

How do you shut off the utilities in your home?

Do you know how to evacuate your home in case of a fire?

These and other questions are important to answer before disaster strikes. Planning ahead is the first step to a calmer, safer disaster response.

Build a Kit

What you have on hand when a disaster happens can make a big difference.  Plan to store enough supplies for everyone in your household for at least a few days.  Your kit should have items such as water, non-perishable food, a flashlight with extra batteries, sanitary supplies, contact information, money and a battery-operated radio.  Don’t forget to include supplies such as food, water, leash, vaccination information and plastic bags for the pets in your family.

Get Trained

Learning first aid and CPR techniques can give you the skills and confidence to help members of your family, neighborhood and workplace.  When disaster strikes, loved ones may be hurt and emergency response can be delayed.  Make sure you can help the people that matter most to you in an emergency.

Volunteer

Few Americans are untouched by Red Cross services – all made possible by volunteers, people like you.  Our communities need our help, and the vital services the Red Cross provides are made possible by the time and effort of our volunteers.

Give Blood

Blood is needed in times of emergency, but the ongoing need is also great.  Every two seconds someone needs blood.  Your blood donation means so much to cancer patients, accident victims, premature infants and others.  Giving blood doesn’t take much time and each donation has the power to save lives.
